What are attitudes?
A predisposition to act in a particular way towards something or someone in a person’s environment
What is woods’ triadic model?
1) beliefs - cognitive element
2) emotions - affective element
3) behavior - behavioural element
What is the ‘beliefs’ element of woods’ triadic model?
> formed through past experiences and others
people of significance
What is the ‘emotions’ element of woods’ triadic model?
> reactions to an attitude object
whether we like or dislike something
influenced by past experience
What is the ‘behaviour’ element of woods’ triadic model?
> the way we act - not always in line with our attitudes
What is an example of woods’ triadic model?
Cognitive: belief that you can’t take a penalty as you missed the last one
Affective: you do not feel confident to take one in following matches
Behavioural: anxious before penalty shoot-outs
What is prejudice?
Prejudgment of a person, group or situation
> evaluation of a situation without having the correct information
> can reinforce stereotypes
What are positive attitudes?
> reflect an admiration for a particular activity
e.g. Player gains rewards avoids injury and has high self-esteem
What are negative attitudes?
> reflects on unpleasant experiences or failures which conditions the waywe view similar situations
e.g. Young rugby player gets injured in school
What are 2 concepts for changing attitudes?
1) persuasive communication
2) cognitive dissonance
