Taste and Smell Flashcards
Olfaction
The sense of smell; it is correlated with the sense of taste
Olfactory Epithelium
The area of the nostril
Olfactory Bulb
A bundle of nerves that have branching endpoints with receptors that are specific to one type of molecule
Cribriform Plate
A plate that separates the olfactory epithelium from the brain
Pheromones
Species-specific molecules that are detected by other animals through smell
Accessory Olfactory Epithelium
A specialized olfactory epithelium in animals for detecting pheromones
Vomeronasal system
A system of the accessory olfactory epithelium consisting of basal and apical cells, were basal cells send signals through an accessory olfactory bulb to the amygdala
Label-line Theory of Olfaction
Each receptor responds to specific stimuli and is linked directly to the brain
Vibrational Theory of Olfaction
The vibrational frequency of a molecule gives its odor profile
Steric/Shape Theory of Olfaction
Each molecule fits in a specific receptor
Anosmia
The inability to smell
Gustation
The sense of taste
Taste buds
Taste receptor cells on the tongue that can be located in the anterior, side, or back. Each taste bud has receptors for the five tastes
The five tastes
Sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami
Label Line Model of Gustation
Each of the five taste receptors have their own axon that synapses at a unique location in the gustatory cortex in the brain
