Social Institutions
Impose structures as to how individuals are expected to behave; anything that can continue without any one individual (includes religion, laws, families, hospitals, etc.)
Ecclesia
Dominant religious organization that includes most members of a society
Churches
Established religious bodies in a larger society
Cults
Radical social bodies that reject values of outside society; usually depend on an inspirational leader and are short-lived
Secularization
Weaking of social and political power of the religious bodies
Fundamentalism
Reaction to secularization – going back to religious beliefs
Communism
A form of government where all property is owned by the community
Capitalism
Private ownership of production with the market driven by supply and demand
Socialism
Common ownership production driven by what benefits society as a whole
Medicalization
Human conditions previously defined as normal become defined as medical conditions that are subject to diagnoses, research, and cures
Sick role
The expectation to take a break while you’re sick
Social Epidemiology
There is a correlation between social advantage/disadvantage and healthcare distribution
