Neonatal Reflexes
Reflexes a newborn is born with that allows them to interact with the world; also called primitive reflexes
Rooting reflex
Head turns in the direction of a stimulus that touches the cheek
Moro Reflex
With abrupt head movements, an infant will fling their arms out, and then cry while retracting them
Babinski reflex
Spreading of the toes when the sole of the foot is stimulated
Grasping reflex
Closing fingers on anything that is placed in the newborn’s hands
Sucking Reflex
Suck on anything that is placed near mouth
Stepping Reflex
If an infant is held upright on their feet, they will try to take steps as though trying to walk
Swimming Reflex
Infant may move arms or legs in a swimming motion
Tonic Neck Reflex
When an infant turns their head to one side, that arm straightens and the other arm bends
Galant Reflex
Baby moves to the side of the body that was stroked
Adolescence
The state between childhood and adulthood; begins with puberty
Puberty
Two-year long sexual maturation of the body; 11 years of age in female, 13 in males
Stranger anxiety
Fear and apprehension of unfamiliar individuals; develops at 1 year
Separation anxiety
Fear of being separated from parental figure; develops at 1 year
Parallel Play
The ability to play without influencing each other’s behavior; develops at two years
