3 components of emotions
Physiological (body functions), cognitive (mental assessments of the situation), and behavioral (emotional response)
Universal Emotions

Why are emotions universally recognizable?
Darwin theorized that these emotions are part of an innate ability that allowed our ancestors better survival
James-Lang Theory of Emotion
We interpret our physiological response to a stimulus as the emotion
Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion
The physiological response and the emotional response occur simultaneously and independently of each other
Schachter-Singer Theory of Emotion
Also known as the Two Factor Theory of Emotion; the physiological response to a stimulus as well as a cognitive response to the stimulus result in emotion (we have to cognitively identify or label the situation)
Lazarus Theory of Emotion
Our cognitive identification of the situations leads to the physiological response and the emotional response simultaneously and independently (cognitive response must come first)
Vicarious Emotions
Emotions that occur when one person intuits the feelings or emotions of another person
