Tablets Flashcards
In dry granulation, what does the roller compaction do?
Increase density by pressing powders under certain pressure
What are some limitations of dry granulation?
- Higher % of fine products = low yield during compression
- Requires RX w/ cohesive properties
- Drug loading cannot be high (<40%)
What are some limitations of wet granulation?
- Needs multiple steps such as granulation and drying
- Not suitable for heat or moisture sensitive RX
- Hard to control (overwetting or underwetting)
What is mottling?
Unequal distribution of color on a tablet
What are the In-process controls of tablets?
- Wt
- Thickness
- Hardness
- Friability
- Disintegration
How is the tablet wt controlled?
- Determined by volumetric fill of the die cavity
2. 20 tabs are weighed individually and average wt is calculated
Tablet thickness can vary with no change in wt due to:
- Difference in density of granulation
- Pressure applied
- Speed of compression
What is friability determined by?
Weight loss (<1%)
(T/F) In-vitro tablet disintegration test bears a relationship to in-vivo action of tabs
False
What are the various ways tablets are coated?
- Pan coaters
- Fluid bed coating
- Compression coating
For molded tablets, the tablets are generally a mixture of powdered _____ with or without powdered _____
lactose + sucrose
What is the major difference between dry and wet granulation?
Dry- binder used at the beginning
Wet - binder used during wetting period
When might it be better to use a capsule form rather than a tablet?
- RX is oxygen-sensitive
2. RX is bitter tasting
