T. Inflammation of Brain Flashcards
Bacterial Meningitis
- Acute inflammation of meningeal tissue
- Always arachnoid mater and cerebro-spinal infection
- Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency.
- Untreated, mortality rate near 100%
- Increased CSF production
- Purulent secretions spread to other areas of brain through CSF.
- If process extends into parenchyma, or if concurrent encephalitis is present, edema and increased ICP become problematic.
Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome
is adrenal gland failure due to bleeding into the adrenal gland. It is usually caused by severe meningococcal infection or other severe, bacterial infection. Symptoms include acute adrenal gland insufficiency, and profound shock.
Viral Meningitis
- when meningitis is caused by a virus) is the most common type of meningitis
- Most common causes are enterovirus, arbovirus, HIV, and HSV.
- Usually presents as headache, fever, photophobia, and stiff neck
Encephalitis
- Acute inflammation of brain
- Sometimes fatal
- Caused by a number of viruses
- Ticks or mosquitoes can transmit epidemic encephalitis.
- CMV encephalitis is common with AIDS.
Brain Abscess
Accumulation of pus within brain tissue
Streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus are causative organisms
Noncommunicating hydrocephalus
complication of Bacterial Meningitis
- occurs when the flow of CSF is blocked along one or more of the narrow passages connecting the ventricles
CFS in Bacterial Meningitis
purulent and turbulant
increased inter cranial pressure 3 big signs
drowsiness
confusion
