Sustainable Transport Flashcards
What is sustainable transport?
Involves maintaining the standard of transport that is required for society and the economy to function efficiently without placing too much pressure on the environment.
Boris/Santander bikes
. Scheme to temporary rent bike in London \+ . Accessible to many (cost location) . Reduce pollution . Healthy activity - . Higher likelihood road accidents . Build Bike lanes . £1400 bike cost Ineffective in reducing congestion Example: . Over 100km2 . 93 million annual trips . £2/min
Car tax
. Annual Car Tax to government for road maintenance
. Electric cars pay no tax
+
. Encourages people to buy eco friendly cars
. Decrease in diesel cars down to 37%
-
. One-size fits all system doesn’t take into account
how much people drive!
. Rich people can afford tax so wont put them off
Example:
. Heaviest emissions cost over £2000
Congestion zones
. Increased cost for vehicles to enter centre of city \+ . Encourages public transport . Reduces traffic . Generates funds - . Unfair on low income families . Expensive administration . False number plates Example: . London is £15 a day . £160 fine for not paying in London
Clean air zone
. Areas where traffic is reduced to improve air
quality
. Charging areas = fee for vehicles not meeting requirements (emissions)
. Non charging = sustainable transport (cycle lanes)
+
. Improves local air pollution (carbon monoxide)
. Slowly discourages use of high emissions vehicles
-
. Pay for administration and monitoring
. Cost to improve transport
. More HGVs on road as orders for business through reduced trips
Example:
. Birmingham charge is £8 a day for cars
. Buses / lorries = £50
. Set up within the last year
Park & Ride
. Free parking in car park on edge of cities. Pay for a bus ticket
+
. Environmentally friendly (40 ppl on one bus rather than 50 cars)
. Cheaper
-
. Can cause congestion outside town centre.
. Cheaper = people making more trips
Example:
. In Oxford £40 for 8 hours vs Park and ride which is free for an hour
Electric Cars
. Electricity used to power cars rather than fossil fuels . Government subsides make it more accessible and no road tax \+ . No emissions . Cleaner environment . No congestion charge - . Building cars / batteries can actually be worse for environment . Charging stations not as common . Takes a long time to charge . Low mileage / range Example: . Tesla = £80K for a car . Electric cars increased by 95% in London . Upto 400mi range on new Tesla's
