A

The area on the edge of the city. Many suburbs were built after 1945 and get newer as they reach the edge of the city.

Burgess model

A

. Land use model
. Describes the patterns of land use of a city in an MEDC
. Based on Chicago where lots of imigrants came + based on ethnic segregation
Rings on model (start in and work your way out):
1. CBD
2. Zone of transition
3. Residential (lower class)
4. Residential (middle class)
5. Residential (upper class)

Hoyt Model

A

. Based on the circles on the Burgess model, but adds sectors of similar land uses concentrated in parts of the city
. Notice how some zones, eg the factories/industry zone, radiate out from the CBD
. This is probably following the line of a main road or a railway
