New Urban Landscapes Flashcards
Gentrification
. Individuals purchase and renovate run down property/industrial space to make it more valuable and appealing
. Can end up pricing long term locals on low incomes out of the marker
. Desierable as it reduces commuting time as new residents will be living in the heart of the urban area
Town centre mixed development
- Should help to prevent/address CBD decline
- Occurring due to stricter control placed on out of town development
- Many cities are encouraging the development of other functions than retail to increase the attraction of the city centre g.Thinktank in Birmingham
- Street entertainment in Covent Garden
- Nightlife- Broad Street
- Constructing new offices, apartments- Mailbox/Rotunda and conference centres- ICC Birmingham, The Cube
Development of cultural and heritage quarters
- A prerequisite for a cultural quarter is the presence of cultural production (making objects, goods, products) or consumption (galleries, shows etc.) eg. Sheffield Cultural Industries Ouarter
- Heritage quarters focus on the history of the area based around small-scale industries eg. Jewellery Quarter Birmingham
- These areas make use of long term associations with certain (hings (e.g. redevelopment of Gloucester docks)
Fortress landscapes
• Landscapes designed for security, which can involve deliberate segregation of people to keep others safe
Includes:

• Railings and fencing around private spaces
• Mosquito alarms- which emit a high-pitched sound only heard by young people, to discourage loitering around buildings
• Street lighting
• Speed bumps
Edge cities
- Self contained settlements which have emerged beyond the original city boundary and developed into cities in their own right
- Happen because of urban sprawl
- LA is a classic example
- Usually develop close to major roads or airports
- Have heen linked to extreme social segregation - white flight
