. Individuals purchase and renovate run down property/industrial space to make it more valuable and appealing
. Can end up pricing long term locals on low incomes out of the marker
. Desierable as it reduces commuting time as new residents will be living in the heart of the urban area

  • Should help to prevent/address CBD decline
  • Occurring due to stricter control placed on out of town development
  • Many cities are encouraging the development of other functions than retail to increase the attraction of the city centre g.Thinktank in Birmingham
  • Street entertainment in Covent Garden
  • Nightlife- Broad Street
  • Constructing new offices, apartments- Mailbox/Rotunda and conference centres- ICC Birmingham, The Cube

Development of cultural and heritage quarters

A
  • A prerequisite for a cultural quarter is the presence of cultural production (making objects, goods, products) or consumption (galleries, shows etc.) eg. Sheffield Cultural Industries Ouarter
  • Heritage quarters focus on the history of the area based around small-scale industries eg. Jewellery Quarter Birmingham
  • These areas make use of long term associations with certain (hings (e.g. redevelopment of Gloucester docks)

• Landscapes designed for security, which can involve deliberate segregation of people to keep others safe
Includes:
• CCTV
• Railings and fencing around private spaces
• Mosquito alarms- which emit a high-pitched sound only heard by young people, to discourage loitering around buildings
• Street lighting
• Speed bumps

  • Happen because of urban sprawl
  • LA is a classic example
  • Usually develop close to major roads or airports
  • Have heen linked to extreme social segregation - white flight

. Over 80 people were killed and hundreds left homeless

. Decline in last 30 years due to decentralisation, high parking costs, congestion
