Supragingingival Perio exam Flashcards
What are the phases of dental biofilm accumulation?
Dental pellicle layer forms first after a couple of hours
First layer of bacteria lay ground for more bacteria to adhere and they start to multiply
Multiplication
Sequential adsorption of organisms
What are the benefits of plaque to bacteria?
Communication (quorum sensing)
Trade (nutrients)
Construction
Teamwork
How can plaque be detected?
Most plaque is the same colour as teeth so it is hard to see
Perio probe and explorer
Disclosing agents
What surface is hardest to target with a toothbrush?
The lingual surface (interproximal needs flossing)
What are the 4 types of electric toothbrushes?
Oscillating
Side to side vibration
Sonic
Ultrasonic
What type of toothbrush is the oral B electric toothbrush?
Oscillating and sonic combined in 1
What does evidence indicate about the effectiveness of electric toothbrushes?
Evidence is very limited for electric toothbrushes being better than manual toothbrushes. Electric toothbrush is more efficient though, it is good for efficiency with time..
Powered is better than manual in terms of gingivitis control in short and long term.
What is the best type of electric toothbrush?
Oscillating is better than side to side vibration
What type of bristles are ideal for pateints?
Short and thick ones are used for thicker deposits of plaque. Normally the cross action is good for normal patients with good dental hygeine.
Patient with advanced gum disease use toothbrush with soft outer bristles.
Medium hardness of bristles is better than hard and soft.
What are the important features of bristles shown by studies?
Studies show that 4 main things are important.
Brush head size and shape should be flexible and reaches most areas of dentition
Tooth brush bristles (different cut, orientation, and length)
Bristles hardness/stiffness (medium is best)
Bristle cut, shape and pattern (wavy or crisscross vs tapered)
What are the types of brushes for other miscellaneous functions?
Orthodontic brushes
SIngle-tufted brushes
Implant brushes
Tongue scrapers
Why should the tongue be cleaned as well?
70% of bacteria causing bad breath are on the tongue.
What are the evidence based recommendations regarding interdental brush usage?
Interdental brushes were found to have moderate evidence for removing plaque between teeth. These methods are ideal for teh case where speaces between teeth allow for insertion of these brushes without causing trauma.
Narrow should be cleaned with floss
If there are wider spaces then use interdental brushes
