Descriptive Anatomy of permanent canines Flashcards

1
Q

What is another name used to describe canines?

A

Cuspids

Also known as cornerstones of the arches due to being at the corners of the dental arches.

Q

How is the canine shaped generally?

Q

What are the unique features of the maxillary canines?

A

It is the longest tooth in the mouth. Its root is usually the longest of any root. (sometimes same size as mandibular canine’s root)

The maxillary canines are usually the last teeth to erupt. Except for the third molars

Q

What shape does the incisal edge of the maxillary incisors have?

A

Distinct pointed tip called a cusp. This cusp has mesial and distal slopes.

Mesial slope is shorter than the distal slope.

Both slopes show tendency towards concavity.

Q

Where is the contact area between the canines and the first premolar and the lateral incisor?

A

Mesially mearly at the junction of the middle and incisal thirds of the crown closer to the cusp tip than is the distal contact point.

Distally in the middle third. Usually it is in the middle third. It is more cervically located than the mesial contact area.

Q

What elevations and depressions are present on the labial surface of the maxillary canine?

A

Elevations: Cusp is usually on a line with the center of the root. Labial ridge runs vertical from the tip of the cusp to the cervical margin.

Depressions: 2 developmental grooves that are shallow longitudinal developmental depressions lie mesial and distal to the labial ridge.

16
Q

What does the labial side of the root look like on the canine?

A

Long, slender, and conical with a pointed apex that curves in the mesial or distal direction but mostly distally.

17
Q

What are the features of the palatal aspects of the crown?

A

The crown is narrower palatally than labially.

Elevations include the cingulum, palatal ridge, and marginal ridges.

Depressions consist of 2 lingual fossae.

18
Q

What is the palatal ridge?

A

It is a prominent vertical ridge that runs from the cusp tip to the cingulum.

Canines are the only teeth to have a prominent palatal ridge.

19
Q

How is the cingulum shaped on the palatal aspect of the crown of the canine?

A

Cingulum is large and sometimes pointed like a cusp in the center

20
Q

Which of the marginal ridges is larger on the lingual aspect of the crown of the canine?

A

The mesial marginal ridge is longer than the distal marginal ridge. Due to the shorter mesial cusp slope, the location of the mesial contact area.

21
Q

How is the root shaped on the palatal aspect of the canine?

A

It is narrower than the labial side, smooth, and convex.

22
Q

What shape is the mesial aspect of the canine?

A

It is wedge-shaped (triangular)

Cervical line curves towards the cusp. Convexity of the canine is less marked than that on the incisors.

The cusp tip is located slightly labially to the root axis.

23
Q

How is the mesial aspect of the root of the canine shaped?

A

The root is conical with a tapered or bluntly pointed apex.

Apical third may curve labially.

Usually labial outline of the root is slightly convex and the palatal outline is more convex

The mesial surface of the root is broad with a shallow, longitudinal depression in most cases.
