Endodontic Radiography Flashcards
How often is the bisecting angle technique used in endodontics?
Bisecting angle technique is never used in endodontics (intentionally) due to too much distortion
Which radiograph plate holder is most accurate when used?
Rinn XCP (most accurate)
What does the collimator do?
Collimator filters out light that is moving in the wrong directions
What is the modified parallel technique?
Modified parallel technique overcomes the magnificaiton of the image that occurs with parallel technique by using an increased vertical angle (~15 degrees) of the central beam which foreshortens the image.
What are the principles of a good radiographic technique?
Must be simple to use
Use a positioning device with beam alignment
Must give an accurate image
No film distortion, bending, etc
Stable position with no hands needed
Reproducible image over time
What happens if the plate bends during an X-ray?
Distorted image can result due to increased distance between X-rays
When should the RINN kit be used for radiographs?
Use for all diagnostic radiographs
Use for all post-RCF and follow-up radiographs
How should image be taken for anterior teeth?
Image should be taken as close to parallel as physically possible for anterior teeth (Using a cotton roll helps with that)
How should image be taken for posterior teeth?
Cotton roll is used for maxillary teeth
Cotton roll is rarely used for mandibular teeth
Occasionally it can be used above and below for stability
Why is it important to take good images?
Distortion of the image can explain manifestations that don’t look so accurate
Why is im important to get accurate radiographs in endodontics?
Root canal length estimation
What principles of orientation are important for radiographic imaging?
Correctly mounted
Block out peripheral light
Even light source
Magnify the image
Why is a troll viewer useful?
Troll viewer held up the film blocks out light and magnifies the film
What factors affect accuracy of radiograph interpretation?
Accuracy of interpretation affected by many factors:
Film type and exposure time
Technique and angulation used
Standard of developing
Endodontic file size used
Superimposition of other structures
Foramen position with respect to root apex (not necessarily at the end of tooth root and can instead be mesial/distal/buccal/lingual)
Density of bone (Trabeculae, cortical bone)
Amount of bone that has been resorbed (How much is required?)
What kind of bone loss can be reliably detected on a PA radiograph?
Cortical bone involved
Junctional trabeculae involved
Cancellous bone involved
Lamina dura destroyed
