what is stridor
predominantly inspiratory wheeze due to larger airway obstruction.
most common cause in children
croup
causes from within the lumen
e.g. foreign body
cause from within the wall
e.g. oedema from anaphylaxis
extrinsic cause
goitre
oesophagus
lymphadenopathy
what is tracheomalacia
loss of tracheal rings
what is the main symptom of tracheomalacia
stridor
investigation of stridor
laryngoscopy - be careful in acute epiglottis as can cause further irritation
bronchoscopy if need to look below larynx
flow volume loop

mask bag ventilation with his flow oxygen

what is snoring
relaxation of the pharyngeal dilator muscle during sleep
vibration of the soft palate and tongue base
what is sleep apnoea
intermittent upper airway collapse during sleep causing apnoeic episodes
classical presentation of sleep apnoea
Typical patient is the obese middle-aged man who presents because of snoring or day time somnolence.

what is sleep apnoea an independent risk factor for
hypertension
complications of sleep apnoea
hyperaemia and hypercapnia (type II resp failure)
