STRESS: Social - Daily Hassles A01 Flashcards
Daily Hassles Definition
Minor day-to-day irritations that can trigger our stress response
E.g. losing keys / bus is late / no parking space
Uplifts Definition
Positive experiences we have
E.g. good night sleep / high grade on a class test
- Uplifts are suggested to neutralise the negative effects daily hassles have on a person
LAZURAS ET AL. Uplifts give us a break from daily hassles / give us the energy to sustain coping strategies
Kanner et al.
Impact of Hassles on Stress & Health
Longitudinal study comparing the impact of life events & daily hassles as a source of stress
- 100 ppts aged 46 - 64 asked to complete hassles and uplifts scale once a month for 9 months
(questionnaires used to measure ppts. mental health & emotional status - Hopkins Symptom Checklist / Bradburn Morale Scale)
Found a NEGATIVE CORRELATION between stress & frequency of hassles - ppts. with fewest hassles = highest wellbeing
Hassles = better predictor of wellbeing than life events
Why Daily Hassles have an effect
Accumulation: Build up of stressors lead to negative effects
Amplification:
A person may be vulnerable to D/H if they are experiencing chronic stress due to L/E
Lack of Social Support
Daily Hassles Accumulation
Build up of stressors lead to negative effects
- Hassle alone = not stressful → lots experienced close together = ongoing feeling of stress & subsequent negative effects
Daily Hassles Amplification
A person may be more vulnerable to D/H if they are experiencing chronic stress due to a L/E
E.g. Going through a divorce - a person may find it harder to deal with minor work problems
→ L/E often create D/H
E.g. Divorce (L/E) = Manage finances & raise children (D/Hs)
Daily Hassles Lack of Social Support
FLEET ET AL. - Asked 320 students how much social support a hypothetical man would need after a life event & daily hassles
- Reported a lot after a L/E
- Reported none after D
Demonstrates how individuals tend not to seek social support for daily hassles
