STRESS: Ind - Type A/B A01 Flashcards
Type A/B Intro
Friedman & Rosenman developed the personality theory based on observed behaviour of waiting room patients
- Some seemed tenser & exhibited certain behaviours such as restlessness
- Others seemed calmer & more relaxed
F&R made a distinction between the groups & labelled them type A/B personality
Type A vs Type B
Type A: Competitive / Impulsive / Unrealistic sense of urgency
Type B: Calm & relaxed / Able to express feelings / Slower speech & movement
Link between Type A personality & Stress Related Illness
Type A more likely to:
- More likely to experience fight/flight response
- Therefore have more stress hormones (e.g. adrenaline) released regularly
Leads to higher blood pressure & heart rate = damages blood vessels = increases likelihood of coronary heart disease & stroke
Type A/B Names

Western Collaborative Group Study
Longitudinal study of >3000 men
- Men categorised as type A or B @ the start of the study
After 8.5 years, >250 men developed heart disease
- 13% type A
- 6% type B
External factors which cause heart disease (such as smoking) were controlled variables
Haynes et al.
Framingham Heart Study
Type A behaviours = associated with an increase in risk of coronary heart disease over 10 years
