STRESS: MOM - Social Flashcards
D/H Savouring
Aims to make individuals more adept at attaining full benefits of any uplifts (becoming better at savouring the moment)
[Uplifts can have a significant buffering effect on daily hassles]
Savouring Researchers
Bryant et al.
Bryant & Veroff
Hurley & Kwon
Bryant et al.
Introduced savouring as a part of positive psychology
- Rather than experiencing the moment - ind. focusses on the feelings it invokes
Bryant & Veroff
Savouring the moment can be as simple as laughing about experience & sharing enjoyment with others
Hurley & Kwon
Investigated correlation between uplifts & how much an individual savoured the positive moments they experienced
- Group w/ low uplifts & savouring = most @ risk of negative effects on wellbeing
- Group showed low levels of positive affect & satisfaction with life
- Group w/ low uplifts & high savouring = similarly positive responses to those with high uplifts
To deal with D/H = individual can become better @ savouring even low levels of uplifts
Types of Savouring
Bryant & Veroff:
(Savouring through)
ANTICIPATION: Thinking about the future - e.g. visualising a trip you have planned with a partner
REMINISCING: Thinking about the past - e.g. Remembering funny moments with a friend
SAVOURING THE MOMENT: Thinking about the present - e.g. Enjoying a new meal by focussing on the flavours / smells > just eating it
Savouring :)
Samios et al. - 300 people who experienced a highly stressful event in the past year completed measures of impact of event
Results showed savouring positively correlated with positive coping (meaning-based coping) & socially-supported coping (using emotional support)
Hurley & Kwon - investigated interaction between uplifts & savouring practised
Group with low uplifts & high savouring = showed similarly positive responses to those with high uplifts
Savouring :(
Subjective - Individual determines what is an uplift & deems what a positive attitude towards stress looks like
West et al. - Meditation can induce psych side effects such as depersonalisation / derealisation / psychotic symptoms (hallucinations) - May also worsen / cause psychosis
