FRLS
Schizophrenia: Psychodynamic Approach A01 - Fixation
Freud proposes that the schizophrenic becomes fixated in the first 1-2 months of the oral stage
- Too much / little oral stimulation creates a fixation
Schizophrenia: Psychodynamic Approach A01 - Regression
Coping mechanism - when individual is under stress they may regress back to the oral stage
- Schizophrenic becomes like a newborn again; the mind of an infant
- Explains detachment to reality
- ID focused - self centred / narcissistic / impulsive
- Lack of ego would make it difficult for someone to engage with reality
- Disengaged from reality and inward focusing (focus on themselves > others)
Schizophrenia: Psychodynamic Approach A01 - Losing touch with reality
During regression, a schizophrenic may regress back to a point where ego does not exist, there is nothing stopping the ID from operating unimpeded
⭐Attachments to the real world are invested in the fabricated existence
- Schizophrenics attempt to recover a sort of normality
- Their need to interact with something external to oneself combined with a distrust of real life leads to the necessity to create an alternative reality
Schizophrenia: Psychodynamic Approach A01 - Schizophrenogenic Mother
Fromm-Reichman (Neo-Freudian) - Mother is to blame for schizophrenia
Mother-child relationship is one of the crucial factors in developing schizophrenia
- Concept proposes that mothers of individuals who develop schizophrenia are overprotective and controlling but at the same time **rejecting and distant
- Overprotection stifles child’s emotional development
- Emotional distance deprives child of personal security
- Leaves an individual who is very vulnerable when faced with stress
MIXED MESSAGES ARE GENERALISED WITH LIFE - INDIVIDUAL IS CONFUSED ON WHAT IS REALITY AND WHAT IS A FIGMENT OF IT
