Debilitating
A disease or condition which makes a person very weak and infirm
GABA
Body’s natural stress relief
(NOT efficient when combined with high levels of adrenaline and/or cortisol)
Arousal
Cathartic
Providing psychological relief through the open expression of strong emotions (causing catharsis - the process of releasing thereby providing relief from strong or repressed emotions)
Cortisol
Stress hormone released by the adrenal cortex
- Supresses the immune system
- Natural killer cells
Adrenaline
Main hormone secreted by the adrenal medulla
Noradrenaline
Main neurotransmitter in the sympathetic nervous system
Stressor
Something that causes a state of stress
Stress Inducing
Caused by stress / mental fatigue
Self-fulfilling Prophecy
You fulfil the prophecy you set yourself
Autonomic Nervous Sysetm
Automatic physiological response the body produces which can be triggered by stress
PARASYMPATHEIC & SYMPATHETIC
Sympathetic ANS
Fight / Flight response
NOT RESTING
Generally speeds body up in a stress response
Parasympathetic ANS
Rest / Digest response
Generally slows body down during a stress repsonse
Equilibrium
A state of physical or mental balance or stability
- Body aims to sustain equilibrium
E.g. Chronic stress lifestyle = person lives normally due to body’s equilibrium
Resilience
The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties
