Stress Flashcards
What is Stress?
General, physiological and Emotional response
2 Systems control the physiological response what are they?
Nervous and Endocrine
What is the Nervous physiological response?
brain, spinal cord, nerves
-somatic nervous system
-autonomic nervous system
- Parasympathetic
-Sympathetic
what is the Somatic nervous system?
conscious actions
what is the Autonomic system?
without your own thoughts put into it
what is parasympathetic?
in control when relaxed, storing energy
what is sympathetic?
arousal stops storing energy in an emergency
what is the Endocrine system?
Glands, tissue, cells –> hormones triggered by the sympathetic nervous system
(both the physiological responses create the flight or fight )
Behavioural responses to stress are controlled by
a) somatic system
b) autonomic system
somatic system ex) some people might cry, listen to music, PA, drugs, alcohol
What is Personality?
the sum of cognitive, behavioural, emotional tendencies
There are different types of personalities, what is type A?
Type A is competitive, controlling, impatient, aggressive, hostile
what is Type B personality?
Relaxed, contemplative, tolerant
Type C personality?
Anger suppression, difficulty expressing emotions, hopelessness, despair
type D personality?
distressed, feel ( but don’t express) negative emotions, avoid social contact
What is Hardiness?
stressors are challenges and opportunities for growth & learning
what is Resilience?
associated with social & academic success in at-risk populations
-non-reactive resilience
-homeostatic resilience
-positive growth resilience
what is the Stress experience?
Physical, emotional & behavioural symptoms of excessive stress are distinct, but interrelated
Stress & Health
> 75% of Canadians report feeling Very stressed at least once/month
What effect is stress having on your long term health?
Brain: depression, anxiety, Insomnia, low energy, migraines
Hair: hair loss, thinning
Stress vs Health/ Disease 3 theories (1)
- General Adaptation syndrome (GAS) - universal and predictable response to all stressors
what are the 3 stages of the 1st theory of stress vs Health/ disease
-Alarm- fight or flight
-resistance- body develops level of homeostasis
- exhaustion- energy expended in 1st 2 stages
Stress vs Health/disease theory number 2
Allostatic Load- Long term wear-&- tear of stress response, too much stress hormone is exposed like cortisol
Stress vs Health/disease theory number 3
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
-Interaction: Nervous vs Endocrine vs Immune System
-stress via actions
-Immune system is flexible: but chronic distress when predisposed/experiencing
-Prolonged cortisol secretion
