What is it caused by?
A
Treponema Pallidum

What are the stages and symptoms associated with the stages?
A
- Primary- raised painless papule w an ulcerated centre (chancre)
- Secondary- widespread mucocutaenous lesions, sore throat, headache, fever, malaise, lymphadenopathy
- Tertiary- characterised by gumma (soft, non-cancerous growth- form of granuloma)

what is the epidemiology?
A
>90% of cases are in MSM

what are complications of syphilis?
A
- neurosyphilis
- congenital syphilis
- cardiovascular syphilis
- AA, Aortic regurgitation

outline the presentation of neurosyphilis
A
- loss of co-ordination of movement
- argyll-robertson pupil
- brain atrophy

how do you diagnose it?
A
- clinical signs
- serology for Treponema Pallidum
- PCR on sample from an ulcer

Rx?
A
Penicillin
