what is genital herpes caused by?
A
- Herpes Simplex Virus 1&2
- generally 2 in genital but there is some overlap

is it mainly symptomatic or asymptomatic?
A
80% have no symptoms

Presentation?
A
- labial ulceration / vesicular lesions
- pain

what are complications that may arise as a cause of it?
A
- autonomic neuropathy
- neonatal infection
- secondary infection

what is HSV2 an important co-factor for?
A
HIV transmission

how do you diagnose it?
A
swab from lesion for PCR

Rx?
A
Aciclovir

what is the treatment for infrequent occurrences of it?
A
Aciclovir once daily until symptoms gone

what is the treatment for frequent recurrences?
A
Aciclovir long-term as suppression

Q
how do you deal with genital herpes in pregnancy?
A
- deliver by C-section if within 6 weeks of primary exposure
- takes 6 weeks for maternal antibodies to develop & cross placenta to protect foetus
- vaginal birth would put infant at risk
- aciclovir if severe
