organism involved?
A
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (gram -ve diplococcus)

what is the epidemiology?
A
- less common than chlamydia
- v common in young sexually active
- more common in men who have sex with men (MSM)

How symptomatic is it?
A
90% in men and 50% in women

Presentation?
A
- discharge
- odourless, green, purulent
- dysuria
- pelvic pain
- testicular pain
- IMB/PCB

Q
diagnosis?
A
Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) on urine / endocervical swab
endocervical swab culture & sensitivity prior to giving Abx

Rx?
A
Ceftriaxone IM once PLUS Azithromycin

Q
what is the follow-up?
A
test of cure at 2 weeks and test of reinfection at 3 months

Q
complications?
A
women: PID, bartholin’s abscess
men: epididymitis
both: acute monoarthritis / septic arthritis
