menopause <40years, characterised by hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism

presentation?
A
early onset of menopausal symptoms

aetiology?
A
- idiopathic - 50% of cases
- iatrogenic
- chemo, radiotherapy, surgery
- auto-immune
- genetic
- +ve FH, Turner’s
- infections
- mumps, CMV, TB

diagnosis?
A
typical symptoms + raised FSH on 2 consecutive occasions

complications?
A
linked to lack of oestrogen. higher risk of:
- CVD
- stroke
- osteoporosis

Mx?
A
HRT until age of normal menopause
options
- traditional HRT
- COCP

Q
what risk does HRT confer over COCP?
A
increased risk of VTE, however this is reduced w transdermal patches
