Stem Cells In Medicine Flashcards
What can be used to cure diabetes and paralysis
Stem cells
What are medical conditions due to
Faulty cells (cells that have been damaged or don’t work properly)
Type 1 diabetes
-Damage to the pancreas that normally produces insulin
Paralysis
Sometimes caused by damage to the nerve cells
Sickle cell
Mishapen red blood cells
What is the process for stem medication
1.) Extract embryonic stem cells from the early embyos
2.) Grow them in a labatory
3.) Stimulate them to differentiate into whichever type of specialised cell that we want
4.) Give them to the patients to replace their faulty cells
Draw backs of embryonic stem cells
1.)Requires embryonic stem cells (the only ones that are able to differentiate into any type of cell)
-Limited supply
Sum ethical issues
2.) Rejection (due to different genomes because they are foreign) but you can give medication to reduce this from happening but it doesn’t always work
An alternative for embryonic is adult stem cells which are taken from the patients bone marrow
Risks of using stem cells
Virus transmission if an embryo has a virus then the human will get the virus
or
Tumour development (because stem cells can divide so quickly they can go out of control and turn into a tumour or cancer)
Ethical objection
Embryo have the potential for human life
Some people believe that curing people is more important than letting people suffer
The government normally regulate this area to research
It is permitted in the uk but it is tight
