Digestive System Flashcards
What are the 3 main groups of food we need
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids
How does the mouth physically break down food
By chewing and saliva is produced to make it easier to pass down
Digestive system routes
Mouth->Osophagus->Stomach->Small intestine->Large intestine->Large intestine->Rectum
The stomachs roles
1.) Contract muscular walls
2.) Produces pepsin (which breaks down proteins)
3.) Produces hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria
Small intestine
Absorbs food into bloodstream
—>Produces enzyme to aid digestion
Pancreas
Lots of digestive enzymes
Gall bladder
Releases bile which
1) Neutralises acid from the stomach
2)Emulsifying fats making the surface area bigger
Where is bile stored
Gall bladder
What is the lining of the intestine
An exchange surface
It has villi which increases the surface area
How is villi adapted
Single layer of surface cells
And has a very good blood supply
What does the large intestine do?
Large intestine absorbs excess water
Role of digestive system
To break down large molecules into smaller molecules
Absorb the small molecules into the body
The pancreas produces
Amylase,protease and lipases
