Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst
A substance that increases the speed of reaction without being changed or used up in a reaction in process
What is an enzyme
An enzyme is a particular type of catalyst which is made by living organisms they are biological catalysts
Enzymes are large proteins and they are made up of amino acids which they make up a shape which catalyses for a unique reaction
Enzymes can reused if not denatured
How enzymes work
Enzymes speed up reactions with an active site which allows substances to lock to the active site
Two models of enzyme action
Lock and key scientists thought that the substrate had to fit in perfectly into the active site
Induced fit model the enzyme actually changes shape slightly as it binds to the substrate complementary
