Cells And Cell Types Flashcards
What are cells
The smallest units of life that can replicate independently
Which cells are multicellular
Animal and plant cells which mean they are growing and replacing dead cells
What are sub-cellular structures
They are organelles and they make up the cells
What does the cell membrane do
Let some substances pass inside and outside the cell
Nucleus
Contains genetic material/dna
Ctyoplasm
Is where the chemical reactions occur (this is a jelly-like substance)
Mitochondria
Provides cells with the energy they need to function (with aerobic respiration)
Also to release energy for the cell to use
Ribisomes
Is where proteins are made
What is the plant cells wall made up of
Cellulose which is really strong and provide support and structure
What is a permanent vacuole
Contains cell sap (mixtures of sugars, salts, water)
Chloroplasts
Is where photosynthesis (process plants use energy from the sun making sugars)
Also the chloroplasts contains chlorophyll (green substance) which makes plants leaves green
Bacteria cells
Are prokaryotic which mean they are unicellular (1 cell)
They don’t contain mitochondria or chloroplasts
They have a circular strand of dna which they need to survive+reproduce
Some bacteria contain plasmids-extra genes which contain (anti-biotic resistance)
Some also have flagella (which allow the bacteria to move around)
