Specialised Cells & Differentiation Flashcards
Specialised cells are
Cells that are designed to play special roles in the organism
They have a specific shape or structure
They have different specific amounts of organelles like (mitochondria)
Sperm cell
The role of the sperm cell is to deliver genetic material to an egg in-order-to fertilise it to achieve this it has adaptations
Adaptations:
It only has half of genetic material then a normal adult cell so it combine with the eggs genetic material
It has a flagellum which acts like a tail so it can swim to the egg through the fallopian tube to reach the egg
The sperm cell being streamlined also helps it to swim
It also contains a lot of mitochondria which provides the energy required for swimming
It also has digestive enzymes to break a hole into the egg when it reaches it
Differentiation
The process by which a cell changes to become specialised
Zygote
The organism that is made when the sperm cell fertilises the egg
