Microscopy Flashcards
Define an object
The real object or sample that you’re looking at
What is an image
It is what you look at when you look in the microscope
What is magnification
How many times larger the image is then the object
What is the equation for magnification
Magnification= image size/object size
Resolution
A measure of how detailed the image is
How does a microscope work?
Light from the room hits the mirror and reflects upwards through the object then it passes through the objective lens to the eye piece then to the eye
What is the positives and negatives about the light microscope
Positives
They are easy to use
They are relatively cheap
Small
Negatives
They require light
They have a resolution of 0.2 micrometers (not good to study the sub-cellular structures)
What are the positives and negatives of electron microscopes
Positives
You can see sub-cellular structures
The resolution is 0.1 nanometres
(2000 X better than light microscope)
Negatives
They are quite big
They are expensive
Order these smallest to largest
Micrometer,Nanometre,Kilometre, Millimetre, Metre
Nanometre
Micrometer (μ)
Millimetre
Metre
Kilometre
How big are atoms
0.1-0.5 nanometres
Size of viruses and bacteria
They are in micrometers
What’s the smallest thing a human can see
Width of a human hair
One centimetres to millimetre
10mm
