Stem Cells Flashcards
What stem cells are there
Adult stem cells
Embryonic stem cells
Plants stem cells
What are stem cells (2 features)
They are able to divide by mitosis to form more cells
or
They can differentiate into specialised cells
How human life starts
A sperm cell fertilises an egg cell which forms a zygote (which is its own organism) then during a couple days it will divide by mitosis making more which forms an embryonic stem cell (can differentiate into any type of special cell) then these cells start to differentiate into the other cells we need. Then in 9 months end up with a baby.
Adults don’t have stem cells they can differentiate into this is done through the bone marrow which contain adult stem cells which divide by mitosis but they can only differentiate into blood cells
Plant stem cells
They are found in the meristems (areas that continue to grow) such as roots and shoots
As the plant grows the unspecialised stem cells will differentiate to what the plant needs
a palisade cell (does photosynthesis)
or
Pholem+Xylem cells (that transport fructose and water)-
or
Root hair cell (that absorb water and minerals)
