Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the role of a circulatory system?
Transport oxygen and nutrients
What does the circulatory system require
Blood
Blood vessels
Heart
Why is a circulatory system called double circulatory
Because one side pumps blood to the heart and the other pumps blood away from the heart to the tissues becoming deoxygenated then it gets oxygenated again
How many chambers does the heart have?
4 chambers
What are the top chambers of the heart called?
Atria an individual one is called an atrium
What are the bottom chambers called
Ventricles
What are found between chambers and vessels
Valves which prevent back-flow which make sure sit flows in the right direction
Name the steps the blood flows through the heart
1) Firstly blood flows into the heart through the vena cava (from the body deoxygenated)and the pulmonary vein (comes from the lungs which is oxygenated)
2) Then flows into the right atrium and left atrium
3) Then blood is pushed out to the pulmonary artery and aorta
What is a pacemaker for and where is it located
It is for making sure your heart has it rhythm this is done with the right atria with electrical impulses
If your pacemaker does not work what would happen
You would have to get an artificial pacemaker a small device that has a wire that carries electrical current telling the heart to contract
What does artery do?
Carries blood away from the heart
The journey of blood around the body
Body tissues ➔ vena cava ➔ right atrium ➔ right ventricle ➔ pulmonary artery ➔ lungs ➔ pulmonary vein ➔ left atrium ➔ left ventricle ➔ aorta ➔ body tissues
What does the coronary artery do?
The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.
Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs?
Pulmonary artery
Which blood vessel carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body?
Aorta
