Stem Cells Flashcards
What are the 3 properties of stem cells?
Self renewal, Potency (Can make a range of cell types), and differentiation
What are the properties of tissue-specific stem cells?
Found in adult tissue, multipotent, build and repair tissue
List 4 things that stem cells can be used for
Basic research, regenerative medicine, drug discovery, cancer treatment
What are totipotent stem cells?
Cells that can develop into a new individual (found in the embryo in days 1-3)
What are pluripotent stem cells?
Cells that can develop into almost all cell types (Cells of the blastocyst in days 5-14)
What are multipotent stem cells?
Cells that can differentiate into a range of tissue types
What are the the two types of pluripotent stem cells?
ESC (embryonic stem cells), and iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cells)
Where are iPSC cells sourced?
Somatic cells
How long is the process of approving regenerative medicines?
15-20 yrs
For how many days can human embryos be grown in vitro?
14
List 3 examples of clinical uses for regenerative medicine
Juvenile diabetes, myocardial infarction, blindness (AMD)
