Sinuses Flashcards
What is the epithelial lining of the sinuses?
Ciliated pseudostratified epithelium with goblet cells (Resp type)
What are the four paired sinuses?
Maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, ethmoid
Where does the frontal sinus drain?
The frontonasal duct, opening at the hiatus semilunaris within the middle meatus
What is the nerve supply to the frontal sinus?
Supraorbital nerve (A branch of the opthalmic)
What is the arterial supply of the frontal sinus?
Anterior ethmoidal artery (a branch of the internal carotid)
Where does the sphenoid sinus open out?
The spheno-ethmoidal recess, supero-posterior to the superior cocha
What is the innervation of the sphenoid sinus?
The posterior ethmoidal nerve (a branch of the opthalmic nerve)
What is the arterial supply of the sphenoid sinus?
Pharyngeal branches of the maxillary arteries
Which sinus has a close relationship to the pituitary gland?
The sphenoid sinus
What are the three ethmoidal sinuses?
Anterior
Middle
Posterior
Where do the ethmoidal sinuses open?
Anterior- hiatus semilunaris
Middle- lateral wall of middle meatus
Posterior- lateral wall of superior meatus
What is the innervation of the ethmoidal sinuses?
Anterior and posterior ethmoidal branches of the nasociliary nerve and the maxillary nerve
What is the arterial supply of the ethmoidal sinuses?
Anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries
Which of the sinuses are the largest?
Maxillary sinuses
Where do the maxillary sinuses open into?
The hiatus semilunaris
