Brick wall model of skin Flashcards
What are the three layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, subcutis
What are the five layers of the epidermis?
Corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale
How is NMF produced?
Profilaggrin-> filaggrin -> NMF
Where is NMF found?
In swelled corneocytes
What does NMF do?
Moisturize the skin and maintain the acidic environment at the stratum corneum
What is desquamation?
When mature corneocytes shed from the surface of the stratum corneum
What connects adjacent corneocytes?
Corneodesmosomes
What surrounds the corneocytes?
Cornified envolope
What surrounds the cornified envolope?
lipid lamellae
What is the role of the lipid lemellae?
Keeps water inside the cells, and helps irritants and allergens to bounce off the skin surface
What is the role of the stratum corneum?
Barrier to penetrating allergens and irritants, and prevents water loss
What is the role of vitamin D within the skin?
Produces anti-microbial peptides for defending skin from bacteria and viruses
What are the 3 signs of inflammation?
Red, itchy, dry
What is the cause of red skin?
Lymphocyte activity causing dilation of blood vessels
What is the cause of itchy skin?
Stimulation of nerves
