What is motivation?
The drive to succeed
What are the 4 types of motivation?
. Intrinsic
. Extrinsic
. Tangible
. Intangible
What is intrinsic motivation?
Motivation from within. The satisfaction of successfully completing a task, pride, self satisfaction
What is extrinsic motivation?
Motivation from an outside source. Praise from the coach, other players or scouts
What is tangible motivation?
Physical - can be touched e.g trophies or certificates
What is intangible motivation?
Non-physical - can be felt e.g praise, concern, encouragement
What is an advantage of extrinsic motives?
They can attract you to the activity and provide early motivation
What are the disadvantages to extrinsic motives?
. If it is used too much it may then undermine the value of the activity and therefore players just compete for the reward
. Extrinsic rewards may create pressure and if reward is not gained then motivation can be lost. The same pressure may also promote cheating
What is the advantage to intrinsic motives?
. Intrinsic rewards are more effective, stronger, and longer lasting. They give more satisfaction and pride and a sense of control
How can a coach motivate a performer?
. Rewards, praise and positive reinforcement
. Make the task more fun
. Make sure performer can succeed
. Point out the benefits of exercise
. Negative reinforcement
. Set attainable goals
. Point out role models
. Break the task down
. Attribute success internally
What are the two types of extrinsic motivation?
Tangible and intangible
How does intrinsic motivation differ from extrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic motivation comes from within whereas extrinsic motivation comes an external source such as a coach, other players
