What is periodisation?
Dividing the training year into specific sections for a specific purpose
Why do elite performers needs to programme their training carefully?
So they can improve performance but also reduce risk of injury
What are the cycles that periodisation is comprised of?

What is macrocycle?
It is the long term planning phase
What are the three distinct periods in macrocycle?
. Preparation period
. Competition period
. Transition period
What is the preparation period?
General conditioning and development of fitness levels
What is the competition period?
Where performer refines skills and techniques as well as maintaining fitness levels
What is the transition period?
It is the rest and recovery stage. It allows athletes to recharge physically and mentally. It ensures an injury free start to the forthcoming season
What is the mesocycle?
Usually a 4-12 week period of training with a particular focus.
What is the microcycle?
Description of one week or a few days of training that is repeated throughout the length of the mesocycle
What is tapering?
A reduction in volume or intensity of training prior to a major competition.
When does tapering usually happen?
A few days beforehand of the competition but can depend on event or type of condition
What is peaking?
Planning and organising training so a performer is at their peak both physically and mentally for a major competition.
