162
Q

name the components of a reflex arc

A

receptor
sensory neuron (affarent)
integration center
interneuron (association neuron)
motor neuron (efferent)
effector

163
Q

describe the difference between cranial and spinal reflexes

A

Location - cranial reflexes have the central nervous system part of their circuit in the brain, while spinal reflexes have it in the spinal cord

164
Q

describe the difference between monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes

A

Monosynaptic refers to the presence of a direct single synapse. No interneuron is present. By contrast, in polysynaptic reflex arcs, one or more interneurons connect afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor) signals

165
Q

describe the difference between ipsillateral and contralateral reflexes

A

Ipsilateral means ‘same-side’ while contralateral means ‘other-side’. When we apply this to reflexes it refers to which half of our body responds to a stimulus. If a stimulus on our right-hand causes us to flex our right hand, it’s an ipsilateral reflex, but if our left hand reacts it’s called a contralateral reflex.

166
Q

describe the difference between somatic and autonomic relflexes

A

somatic reflexes involve skeletal muscles and are voluntary, while autonomic reflexes involve smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands and are involuntary.
