-They create energy and excitement
-increases popularity of sport
-increase profile of sport
-helps to draw media attention
How do spectators affect performers?
-Can provide an athlete a home field advantage
-place pressure on performer from crowd noise. Which can make them lose concentration and make mistakes
What is crowd trouble and how does it affect sporting events?
It is verbal and physical abuse towards performer/opposition/spectators
Increases costs for sporting events to control rowdy crowds
What is hooliganism
Disorderly, aggressive, violent behavior. Associated with gang mentality
What causes hooliganism? (7p)
-Rivalry between groups of fans
-family tradition of supporting a team
- spectators intending to verbally and physically abuse performers
-media bring hype and attention
-alcohol
-drugs
-officials decisions cause frustration (unjust)
What are the strategies to combat hooliganism?
-early kick off times reduce alcohol consumed
-alcohol restrictions
-all seater stadiums prevent supported from going to different parts of ground( improve organization=better safety for players)
- fans segregated to different parts of stadium
-installed video surveillance,Stuart’s and police monitor supporters behavior
-known hooligans have travel restrictions or bans on watching team
-educating about bad behaviour prevents hooliganism
