what is the fundamental attribution error?
the tendency to overemphasize dispositional factors and to underestimate situational factors when making attributions about the cause of a persons behavior

what is self-serving bias?
the tendency for people to take credit for their successes while attributing their failures to external situations (I caught that ball because I am a good softball player, but I missed that other one because the sun was in my eyes)
what is central route persuasion?
when people make decisions based upon factual information, logical arguments, and a thoughtful analysis of pertinent details. (you buy a cell phone based upon it’s price and number of available options)
what is peripheral route persuasion?
when ppl make decisions based on emotional appeals and incidental cues (perfume ads)

the persuasion strategy of getting a person to agree to a modest request as a set up for a later much larger request (can I go over to a friends…can I stay the night)
cognitive dissonance
the state of psychological tension, anxiety, and discomfort that occurs when an individuals attitude and behavior are different
what is social facilitation
when a person is performing a task they are normally good at better when they have a crowd
what is social inhibition
when a person is performing a task they are normally good at worse when there is a crowd

the phenomenon of people making less efforts to achieve a goal when they are in a group

the reduction of self awareness and personal responsibility that can occur when a person is part of a group whose members feel anonymous

the effect where people are less likely to assist in a given situation when there are people around (kitty genovese
what is group polarization?
the tendency for a groups dominant opinion to become stronger or more extreme after an issue is discusses
what is groupthink?
when people forgo their own opinion in order to preserve group cohesiveness
what is conformity?
the tendency to adopt the behavior, attitudes, and beliefs of other members of a group
what is obedience?
the performance of an action in response to the direct orders of authority or person of higher status
