Social influence - social change Flashcards
social change
change in societies attitudes/beliefs
social crypto-amnesia
forgetting where social change came from and not giving credit to minorities who caused it
social norm intervention
using normative social influence by providing info on what others are saying to promote a certain attitude/behavior. e.g covid guidance, recycling, etc.
what did Zimbardo say about social change?
obedience can create social change through gradual commitment. obeying smaller instructions makes it harder to disobey larger instructions. e.g Milgram’s study, gradually working up shock levels
when are we more likely to have our views changed?
when an ingroup (someone we share characterstics with) has a minority view/belief. e.g white person telling other white person about civil rights = more successful than black person telling white person
