Cardwell et al
gender is a social dimension and therefore requires psychosocial explanations that relate to environmental influences
Rubin et al (1977) aim
find out if new parents stereotype their babies
Rubin et al method and findings
parents asked to describe babies within 24 hours of being born. baby boys = alert and strong. baby girls = soft and delicate. shows parents stereotype from early age even when no gendered behaviour is shown. can even happen before birth if sex is known.
Seavey et al (1975) aim
see if gender attached to baby affected adult responses
Seavey et al method
same 3 month old dressed in yellow, 1/3 labelled as female, 1/3 as male, 1/3 not told. female = adults played with doll, male = adults played with plastic ring, no label = assigning sex based on physical characteristics. adults interact differently with infants based on sex.
