Social Engagement Flashcards
Why do mental health probs always occur
Lack of social and emotional support
What is polyvagal theory and who came up with it
Dr Porges
-refers to many branches of vagus nerve that extends to several body areas
subtle interplay between biological factors and social factors (eg. seeing a face can alter how we feel)
What are mirror neurons and ex
Mirror neurons register other inner experiences in our own bodies, making internal adjustments to whatever signals we see.
eg. the mm of our own face gives others clues about how calm or relaxed you feel
What does social support require
reprocity and recieving a sense of empathy
why is isolating oneself to a group not a great thing sometimes
the groups rarely foster the mental flexibility needed to be full open and caring toward life
–have to conform to the group
What can happen to an individual when they experience trauma or extreme distress
faulty neuroception leading to an altered perception of risk and safety
-individuals must learn to respond appropriately to safety and threats so that they can experience relaxation and true reciprocity
When the VVC is predominant what occurs
we smile when others smile, nod our heads in agreement, frown to indicate empathy etc
signals to the heart and lungs to slow down HR and increase depth of breathing `
If the fight or flight response is insufficient for removing the threat what is activated
Dorsal vagal complex- contributes to disengagement, collapse and freezing
How is the polyvagal theory relevant in newborns
as we smile and interact with newborns we are stimulating the growth of the VVC
What is the reptilian brain and what does it do
–located in brainstem
- management of our bodies physiology
- identfication of comfort, safety, threat, hunger etc
- life sustaining things
what is the mammalian brain and what does it do
limbic system
-seed of emotions, monitor of danger, determines what is pleasurable/scary, survival importance
-made thru experiences
What is the rational brain and what does it do
Neocortex- unique to humans
-language, abstact thought, reasoning, planning
