Social Cells 1: receptors etc. Flashcards
Ligands
signalling molecules released by cells to communicate
What are three different types of short distance communication?
Juxtacrine, Autocrine and Paracrine
What are two different types of long distance communication?
Synaptic and Endocrine signalling
Autocrine signalling
A cell targeting itself
Juxtacrine// Contact dependent
Contains membrane bound signalling molecules
Endocrine signalling
Long-distance, ligands are hormones, very specific, may be produced by a gland
Paracrine signalling
Short distance, cell to cell communication, requires a local mediator
What are some paracrine signalling mediators?
Histamine, Thromboxane and leukotrienes
Synaptic signalling
technically short distance, but allows rapid long distance signalling- electrical impulses are transformed into a chemical signal
What are the 4 main types of receptors
ionotropic, metabotropic, RTK’s and intracellular
What are some examples of hormones?
Adrenaline/ Noradrenaline
What types of ligands can cause paracrine signalling?
Growth factors, Gases, Inflammatory Mediators
What are the three ways juxtracrine signalling can occur?
Membrane proteins present on each cell interact with each other, Membrane proteins interact as part of an extracellular matrix, Junctions link cells allowing small molecules to pass between them
What is a Competent cell
A cell with a specific complimentary receptor to the ligand
Which cell signalling uses local mediators?
Paracrine
