Soc20-Levers Flashcards
What is a lever?
A lever refers to a system of muscles and bones working together to bring about movement
What is a fulcrum?
A fulcrum or pivot is the point around which the lever rotates(joints)
What is a load?
A load is the force that is applied by the lever system. The load is the object you want to move a dumb bell with your arm
What is an effort?
An effort is a force that is applied by the user of the lever system. The effort is supplied by your muscles.
What is a lever arm?
A rigid bar such as a bone
What are the three classes of levers?
First class levers, second class levers and third class levers
Whats in the middle in a first class lever?
Fulcrum is in the middle
Whats in the middle in a second class lever?
Load is in the middle
What is in the middle in a third class lever?
Effort is in the middle
How can we remember the levers?
FLE
Fulcrum
Load
Effort
Example of a first class lever?
A tricep dip
Example of a second class lever?
A calf raise
Example of a third class lever?
Bicep curls
What is a mechanical advantage?
This happens when the output of the lever is greater than the input, you are getting more out than you are putting in. First and second class levers are examples
What is a mechanical disadvantage?
The input of the lever is greater than the output-the force you apply is greater than the output. Third class levers are an example of this.
