Soc16-Structure Of The Blood Vessels And Their Chracteristics Flashcards
What arteries?
Arteries are blood vessels that take oxygenated blood away from the heart. Arteries have thicker walls, are more elastic and carry blood at a higher pressure than veins.
What are veins?
Veins are blood vessels that take deoxygenated blood towards the heart. Veins have thinner walls, are less elastic and carry blood at a lower pressure than arteries.
What are capillaries?
Capillaries are blood vessels which are microscopic. They are one cell thick that link arteries with veins. The blood pressure is low in capillaries.
What is vascular shunting?
It refers to the distribution of blood around the body. During exercise the vascular system redistributes blood to areas with the greatest demand for oxygen away from areas with a lower demand for oxygen.
What are the components of the blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen around the body
What do white blood cells do?
They protect you against illnesses and diseases and kill them
What does plasma do?
Plasma clots blood and fights diseases and other critical functions
What do platelets do?
They are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding
Vaso dilation
The widening of blood vessels
Vaso-constriction
When the blood vessels go smaller so there are other parts with more blood
