Soc12 Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system
Protection of vital organs, muscle attachment, joints for movement, storing calcium and phosphorus, red and white blood cells production
What are the 5 bones of the torso
Sternum,scapula,clavicle,rib cage,pelvis
What are the 6 bones in the arm
Humerus,ulna,ratius,carpals,metacarpals,pholonges
What are the 7 bones in the leg
Patella,fermur,tarsals,metatarslas,pholanges,tribia,fibula
What are the 6 bones in the Spine
Cervical,thorocic,lumbar,coccyx,sacram
Flat bones
Flat bones usually protect organs or offer a good surface for
muscles to attach to.
Long bones
Long bones are longer than they are wide. They don’t have to
Be big bones
Short bones
Short bones are generally the same size in length, width and
thickness. The only short bones in the body are the carpals
(cuffs) in the wrist and the tarsals (toes) in the foot.
Irregular bones
Irregular bones have odd shapes and vary in function. An
example is the vertebrae which help protects the spinal column
and the sacrum which has lots of attachment points.
Joints
Ball in socet, pivet, hinge,condyloid
Functions
Protect vital organs, produces red and white blood cells, stores calcium, muscle attachment, joints for ,movemnt
Condyloid joint
A condyloid joint is similar to a ball and socket joint but the ball rest against the end of the bone. The wrist is a condyloid joint
Pivot joint
Pivot joint allows the bones to rotate. One bone shaped like a cyylindar rotates inside another bone. Elbow and neck are a pivot joint
Ball and socket
In a ball and socket joint the rounded head of a long bone fits into a cup shaped hole. Bothe the hip and shoulder joints are a ball and socket joint
Hinge joint
A hinge joint is a fairl that allows inly backward amd forward motion or straightend. Examples of doing this movement is sqauting
