Soc 20 - Lever Systems Flashcards
What is a lever?
a system of muscles and bones working together to bring about movement
How does a lever work?
It has four components: Fulcrum Effort Load Lever arm
What are the different classes of levers?
First class levers Second class levers Third class levers
First class lever
Fulcum is in middle - F
Load on left
Effort on right
Second class lever
Load is in the middle - L
Effort to the left
Fulcrum to the right
Third class lever
Effort is in the middle - E
Fulcrum to the left
Load to the right
Example of a first class lever
Tricep dip
Example of a second class lever
Calf raise
Example of a third class lever
Bicep curl
Mechanical advantage
A large load can be lifted with a relatively small amount of effort (applies to first and second class levers)
Mechanical disadvantage
Third class levers cannot lift as heavy a load with the same amount of effort, due to the position of the effort and the load from the fulcrum
