Soc 16 The Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
Arteries
Take blood away from the heart in thick walls as the blood is at a high pressure
Viens
Carry deoxygenated blood towards the heary
Capillaries
Capillaries are microscopic vessels - just one cell thick
At one end, capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
Blood pressure
Blood pressure is a measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body
Red blood cells
They transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s cells, and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
White blood cells
They produce antibodies to fight against infection and diseases
Platelets
These are tiny fragments (formed in the bone marrow) which clump togehter to help blood clot and stop bleeding
Plasma
It takes nutrients, hormones and protiens to the parts of body that needs it. It also disposes of waste
Vascular shunting
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from unactive areas
