Soc 16 Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
What is vascular shunting?
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from in active areas ; acheived by vascodilation and vascoconstriction
What are arteries
They take oxigenated blood away from the heart to the working muscles
What are the walls of arteries like?
Arteries have thick walls to be able to withstand the high pressurised blood that flows through them
What are veins?
Veins carry deoxigenated blood from the body back to the heart
What are the veins walls like ?
veins have thin walls as they carry blood but at a lower pressure.
What does the pulminoary vein do
The pulminoarty vein is different as it carries oxigenated blood from the lungs back to the heart.
What are capillaries?
Capillaries are 1 cell thick and transport oxegenated blood from the heart to the working muscles
Capillaries carry oxegenated blood and nutrients around the body
They a,so carry deoxigenised blood into the veins, picking up waste product and taking them around the body to dispose of them
Capillares are where gaseous exchange occurs
